Birthday Celebrations!

August 20, 2012

We had a few birthdays to celebrate today, so we had a house full!

I love to have everyone over to eat, but didn’t want to spend the whole time in the kitchen, so I was super lazy with the menu today, and not super point friendly either.

I had a gift card to a local cupcakery, so I used it!
Red Velvet, Strawberry Lemonade, Lemon Poppyseed and Birthday Cake!
I ate 1/2 of a Strawberry Lemonade

Excited for my Project!

August 19, 2012

I spent the afternoon sitting in the garage with the door open so the dogs could watch the people drive by, walk by, bicycle by…..and bark at every single one of them, and listen to me say….”stop barking….let’s be nice”….over and over and over again……

While sitting in my garage…….studying my Grandmas Vintage Singer and debating exactly what I would like to do with it. I found a great blog where a lady had the exact same machine and made it look super cute.

Don’t you LOVE it? So I am thinking something similar, but rustyish orangeish and brownish….ish….those colors would work well with the rest of our house…..I think.

For breakfast today…..Oatmeal topped with a chopped apple and cinnamon.

Then a nice 3 mile walk with Tucker……

Snack? Blueberry Greek Yogurt topped with Kashi GoLean

Lunch?

My buddies…….

Later in the afternoon, I went to buy Cupcakes for tomorrow. Then I went to Costco for Lasagna, Caesar salad fixings, and garlic bread. We are having family over tomorrow at noon to celebrate a few family birthdays.

Our grandson, Alex, is here tonight, and we spent the evening grilling hot dogs, playing outside and sitting in the driveway in front of the fire pit, eating popcorn and telling scary stories……but I made them all have a Happy Ending! 🙂

Back to Basics

August 18, 2012

Thursday night I woke up after midnight and could NOT clear my brain enough to relax and go back to sleep! When I did fall back asleep around 3:30 am, I slept hard! So when I woke up around 8:00 am, I felt blahhh. I had a lunch at 11:30 in my neighborhood, so I putted around the house and got a few things done and ate nothing.

Since my morning was really out of routine for my usual Friday, I didn’t make it to my WW meeting, but did weigh at home.

I stayed the same this week, which is irritating, but I am trying to not dwell on it. I follow another blogger and she had some great information for me this week on my fruit consumption. I do eat a lot of fruit. I am going to take her advice and watch how much fruit I eat, and watch what I eat my fruit with. While she did agree that I did not get fat eating fruit, it could be a culprit of me not being able to move forward with my weight loss.

At the neighborhood lunch, I did not take pictures, but probably should have. The hostess, Stacey, has an awesome reputation for hosting wonderful lunches throughout the year, and a reputation for just being an awesome person! Stacey does a lot of great things for the community, and often, her lunches are a way of getting together for great food, and at the same time, bringing a donation for a local charity, sometimes in the form of money, other times in the form of a food donation.

While this particular lunch was not a charity themed lunch, she did help a lot of mom’s get out of the house for the afternoon by bringing them together to enjoy some great food, wine and friendship. This was a “Back to School” lunch. Simply a way to get together with the neighbors after sending the kiddos back to school for Fall. Everyone contributed either appetizers, salads, bread, wine or dessert. Everything was wonderful. I tried hard to take small portions of each, and I drank water, lots of water, yet again, while the others enjoyed wine or beer. (Secretly, this surprisingly is not bothering me. I hope people like me sober.)

In the evening, Mike and I had plans to go with The Newlyweds and her parents to Swope Park for the Annual Ethnic Food Festival, which I had never even HEARD of!

I had no idea what to expect, (other than possibly lots of fried foods, and a beer tent) so it just seemed like a good idea to eat a smart choice before we left. So I did.

Grilled chicken (protein with my fruit) and berries.

The festival was great! Over 30 different countries were represented! None of the food was made by restaurants, but home cooked by individuals from community centers. Jordan (the bride) and her parents have been going for several years, so they had lots of favorites they wanted us to try. I took lots of bites of lots of things……The vegetable roll from Vietnam, the crepe from France, the curry potato something from India, the Baklava Ice Cream from Greece, rice rolls from Japan and rice noodles from Thailand……and on and on. Those are the highlights of the night. I skipped the beer tent and ordered a virgin Sangria, and drank lots of water. We had perfect weather and a great time! In the middle of all of the food tents, there was a stage with dancers, representing all of the countries, that will perform throughout the weekend. It was $3 to get in, and at each booth you could spend $1 to $5 and have a great taste of something or a full meal. I recommend it if you live in KC and are looking for something to eat! I mean, something to do!

Here’s a few pic’s from the evenings festivities…..

Tents! Tents! Everywhere Tents!

You see Pakistan?

Me graciously sharing my Virgin Sangria…it was a bit sugary….

Mike wanting to know which country has the best Kabob….He found it in the Philippines.

Dan, Jordan’s dad, wondering what country he ate the Papaya salad at last year.

Winding down for the evening……

See you next time, World.

I am going to focus on going “Back to Basics” this week. This means I will follow all of the healthy guidelines that WW suggest. Drinking all of my recommended water, eating the recommended amounts of fruits and veggies, getting in my dairy, taking my multivitamin, getting in my healthy oils, and exercising.

I don’t really know how to count yesterday’s eats……so I’m not.

But this is my theme for the week………

“love the life you live, live the life you love”

I have had a week of great food and awesome walks and a positive attitude, so I was excited to hop on the scale Wednesday morning to see how my week was going. Uh….did NOT expect a GAIN???

It doesn’t even make sense. I would say that 90% of the time, when I step on the scale, I know if to expect a gain, a loss, or to stay the same. I was blindsided, and quite frankly pissed off. Usually with a gain, I’m just mad at myself, but I wasn’t sure WHO to be mad at, so I chose the World.

Then I spent the rest of the day completely sabotaging myself. Truly. What the heck is THAT all about?

I was going to brunch with my daughter at 11:00, and had decided a banana would be all I would have before we met. Then I ate a Protein Bar anyway! It was 5 PPV. Fine, I’ll eat a salad, no biggie. Nope. I ordered half a Paradise Salad and half of a Paradise Chicken Sandwich. It had mayo on it…..and I ate it! Still not a terrible decision, but I would have done better with just a salad and not eating the bread and cheese and mayo on the sandwich.

I really had a great time seeing Tess. She always makes me laugh. After brunch, Tess had things to do (she drove home from college for the day to do a few things)and I went on with my day. One stressful situation after another came up. ANXIETY set in! I wasn’t going to tell exactly what I ate, but I was going to post the Points as best as I could. Screw it! We all mess up sometimes and do stupid things. I ate, throughout the afternoon, four Nutrigrain Strawberry Cereal Bars, and four bags of Baked Lays Chips (one of each flavor out of the box from Costco). There. I feel better. It’s like confession I suppose.

I have my OWN plan where, when stressed out, and wanting to binge, I set the timer for five minutes and make myself think about what has me wigged out….what can I do about it….and will eating anything really fix the problem, or simply add to my anxiety. Well, I guess I lost all control and forgot my OWN plan! Urg.

It’s weird sometimes how we can have such great advice, then not follow it ourselves.

Everything continued to go downhill. Things broke, I tripped over stuff, the dog pooped in the house…….one of THOSE days. Mike called, I was cranky. He called again later, I confessed my eats, to which he replied. ” I thought something didn’t sound right in your voice”. Geeezzzz , I love that guy. When he came home, I told him he was really lucky that I am the kind of person that can admit when I have had a rotten day and that I’m being a total bitch. He agreed that he really was lucky. (the man has a ridiculously large amount of patience)

I went outside and took my frustrations out on this with some sandpaper. It was my grandma’s, and I think I have a fun idea for it.

Here is my dinner….Veggies and two pears.

Brunch on Thursday with a friend who ALWAYS makes me smile!
(only fruit to eat before brunch!)

“love the life you live, live the life you love”

All original members are still participating, which really makes me happy. (Two humans, one dog). I do hate getting up at 5:30 in the morning (unless it means we’re catching a flight to go on vacation), but I really love that feeling of having my exercise out of the way before 7:00 am. It just makes the entire day feel positive and productive and good.

Today’s Best Body Bootcamp involves cardio and core. I am counting my morning walk as my cardio and hopefully I can make it through the scissor kicks and crunches without the dogs licking my face like last time.

Again, I found myself at Starbucks while I wait on my car at the dealership. I bought tires just a few days ago, and I knew when I left the dealership there was something I was forgetting to have them look at. The next day, my brakes squeaked EVERY time I applied them. I just kept looking around at other people like THEIR brakes were squeaking!

(Which reminds me of another story. I had a car that the horn would randomly start honking while I was driving down the street. The worst part was when this happened at a red light. I just looked around like everyone else was doing……with that look on my face that said…..”WHO IN THE HECK IS HONKING??” This went on for longer than I would like to admit. I finally sold it. Nobody could determine the cause of the random honking. I failed to share that information with the young sweet couple that bought the car from us. Seriously……the guilt is killing me.)

Back to the present. I called the dealership to schedule yet another appointment. That’s okay, just another reason to enjoy a cup of coffee and people watch and eavesdrop. Turns out, my brakes were just a little dusty, so they cleaned them up for FREE! Wonder if they would dust my house for free??? Oh…..AND…..while I am sitting at Starbucks Blogging away……John (my guy at the Dealership), drove my car to Starbucks and walked my keys in to me!

I THINK IT’S GOING TO BE AN AWESOME DAY!

While having coffee, and blogging, I learned that the guy sitting beside me, Jim, retired a year ago and comes here every morning for coffee (he is also eating Girl Scout Cookies) and to read the paper. I love that a few people still like to read the paper! Then he goes to the community center Monday through Friday to exercise, then to the library (the one over here is HUGE and very nice) to check out a book. He also likes gardening.

One of the employees here, Carla, is getting married next week, and everyone, but me, already knew about it. Even Jim knew!

Jim still had one cookie left when I took this picture of my cup from home, filled with a Grande Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte, and my Luna bar.

When I left Starbucks, I debated several different things I could do. Gift shop for my daughters birthday, get a pedicure, go to work (it’s VERY flexible and only 3 or 4 hours), enjoy the light rain and somewhat Fall like morning….I think it’s 65 degrees……and drive to Louisburg, Kansas for my annual jar’s of Apple Butter and Pumpkin Butter….and a donut? So I cranked up some Country music and headed down the highway. I am SO ready for Fall.

They really make the Cider in that barn!

So cute and cozy…..

You wanna go with me next time?

My favorite wall……the Butters…….

Lots of cider, but I passed on that today…….

My TWO favorites! Pumpkin and Apple.

You are not allowed to leave unless you buy a fresh donut…..so I did.

I proudly only ate half, and tossed the other half out the window to a lucky raccoon, or possum, or crow? Oops. Is that bad for them?
1/2 Cake Donut = 3 PPV (I gotta get some serious veggies in today!)

While browsing Pinterest this morning, I came across this recipe for a Quinoa Black Bean Burrito Bowl.

Since I have been experimenting with Quinoa lately, and had a bunch of it ready to go, I threw together this quick little lunch bowl.

1/2 C cooked Quinoa
1/4 C corn
1/4 C black beans
Pepper Jack Cheese
1/8 avocado
A little taco seasoning
Salsa

I mixed it all up and dug in. Three bites in, I thought, I bet if I put this in the microwave for just a bit, it would really be delicious! So I did, and it WAS!

When you get out of bed at 5:30 am, you can get a LOT done. Mike is going back to his sisters to finish the fence job he started on Sunday, so I have from 5:30 am until around 9:00 pm by myself today. With all of the things marked off of my “to do list”, and only having to work a few hours today, I decided I should relax this evening in the Movie Theatre! I have been wanting to see the Meryl Streep/Tommy Lee Jones movie, Hope Springs, and Mike didn’t seem real excited about it, so I went alone. I love to go to the movies by myself. Some people get it, others think its weird. The only time it kinda sucked, was when I decided to see a comedy by myself. Not a real great idea. Each time I laughed out loud, there was nobody to laugh with, and when I looked at the people beside me to laugh with, and they didn’t look back at me, it WAS weird, so I have decided the best movies to see alone are dramas or romantic comedies, because really, I don’t like anybody to watch me cry, and I cry a lot when I watch movies. I loved the movie. It was exactly what I was in the mood for.

One more meal out of my stuffed chicken…….and a Caesar Salad.

Do you have one of these to poach eggs in the microwave?

I’ve had it forever! Microwave for 1 1/2 minutes, and the perfect poached eggs!

I was thinking about Nutella here……Hazelnut Flavored Coffee with Chocolate Syrup and a little frothed milk. I will be drinking this again tomorrow morning!

I got another great walk in today with a couple of girl friends. A good 45 minutes of walking today. No where near the 6.6 miles like yesterday! I felt great when I got out of bed this morning, but my calves are starting to feel the miles tonight. Pretty sure Weigh In is going to go well on Friday. 🙂

I am beginning to feel bad calling the following a smoothie. It has certainly become a favorite after a workout of any kind. it’s TOTALLY a shake! Look at how thick that is!

WW Creamy Chocolate Smoothie Mix
1 C water
1 C ice
1 frozen banana

Even though I am planning on a salad and some leftover stuffed chicken for dinner, the weather was so cool, I was in the mood for some grilling. I grilled up some marinated Chicken Breast and some Mock Fillet’s. (Bacon Wrapped Sirloin) I have plenty to freeze some, and I shouldn’t have to cook for the next couple of nights for sure……

Not a pretty sight for a vegetarian, but I was happy.

Simple Caesar with fresh shaved pieces of Parmesan and leftover stuffed Chicken for me tonight.

“Why do you think some people have self discipline and some people don’t?”
Mike said…
“Well, it’s a choice.”
I didn’t like it when he said it, but after thinking it about it for a long, long time, I knew………….He was SO right!

“love the life you live, live the life you love”

Friday Night was Happy hour with girl friends. I sipped on one very large tumbler of Sprite Zero with a little Diet Cranberry Juice……

Zero PPV

…….followed by lots of water! Snacked on raw veggies and a few other low point options.

Then Mike and I headed out to eat at our favorite Neighborhood spot for dinner. Lots of the regulars were there and we bellied up to our usual spots at the bar for some dinner, laughs and live music.

I successfully drank water and coffee with my dinner, and left feeling really good.

Saturday morning I was running late for my coffee date at my dad’s house with my dad and brother. When I opened the fridge, I saw the taco meat that needed to be eaten, so I heated it up, ate it too fast, grabbed a banana and headed out the door. I guess I was just thinking…protein and quick.

Late in the afternoon, lunch was the last of the taco toppings (I really hate to throw out food) topped off with a Spicy Black Bean Burger (since I finished off the taco meat for breakfast….weird).

Saturday night we had a Surprise 50th Birthday Party to go to. I was really excited for the party. This is a childhood friend of mine with several siblings that I hadn’t seen in many (20?) years. I had no idea who was invited, how many we’re invited, or what type of food and drink to expect.

We had a GREAT time! It was so fun to see some of her siblings I hadn’t seen for so long! It was one of those nights where we kept introducing ourselves to different people and finding odd connections all night long! I was so wrapped up in chatting, me drinking bottles of water along with one diet coke, while everyone else seemed to be enjoying beer, wine and sangria, didn’t even phase me! Yay!

Food options were plentiful with BBQ meats and lots of fruit and raw veggies to snack on too!

I was very aware of the large birthday cake, yummy looking cupcakes, and peanut M&M’s (MY FAVORITE!) that were surrounding me. But I focused on the people and the conversation and the food and beers became lost to me in the background.

I think if I can go to Happy Hour with the girls followed by dinner and live music at a bar with my husband on Friday night, and a large Birthday Party with a bunch of fun people and deck with a large tub of cold beer on a Saturday night, and not have one drink, I can DO this.

Mike was gone most of the day working on a project at his sisters house. So I was on my own. On my agenda? Grocery Shopping and exercise. I decided to take both dogs for a short walk. When I got back, I thought Tucker and I would go for a run together. Well, we hadn’t done this before, and the whole running and stopping to sniff didn’t go well. We got in about a mile or so when I decided to bring him back home.

I had sent a text to a few friends to see if anyone was up for a walk, and one friend said she was in! Yay! When we met up, she told me a route she takes, and I wasn’t in any hurry to get home, so off we went. I ALMOST DIED! I think I was hungry and hadn’t drank enough water yet, but the closer we got to home, the dizzier I got! I made it in the house alive and chugged a bunch of water and jumped into a cool shower. Then I drove the route.

6.6 miles! Nice job girls!

After my shower I enjoyed more water and a nice Fruit Buffet, that included a Strawberry Smoothie…..

New recipe!

I thought this recipe turned out REALLY, REALLY good, but I didn’t realize Mike wasn’t crazy about cooked spinach. I would totally make this again though and maybe stuff Mike’s portion with broccoli?

For the outside I used Panko bread crumbs mixed with a little taco seasoning. This varies from the recipe a bit.

I rarely make corn, but the chicken was stuffed with spinach and Pepper Jack cheese, and it sounded like the perfect combo along with a side salad.
