New Year’s Eve

I’m not quite certain, but I think it’s going to be a quiet night in tonight. The Holiday’s have been super busy, as usual, and the last few days have been full as well. Not having real specific plans tonight means no temptations of party foods and party drinks, and losing weight last week over Christmas, and looking like I am going to lose weight over New Year’s week also? Well, I’m thinking staying in is a good idea….Don’tcha think?

I’ll get in an extra long treadmill workout today, and plan a great dinner to have in tonight!

A few Un-pictured Snacks (turkey tenderloin, shrimp, 2 stuffed mushrooms) at an Anniversary Party and six large glasses of water!

I walked into the party and filled up a solo cup with water. I drank it non-stop, and each time I finished it, I went to the sink and filled it up again. It kept me from snacking, and I never really had the desire for beer or wine, so it worked!

Keeping it Simple!

If you have been reading my blog, you know that I am trying Weight Watcher’s new Simple Start Plan to get off the 10 pounds that I have put on through the months of November and December. I think Simple Start was designed as a 2 Week Plan for New Members so they are not overwhelmed with calculating points.  Now, I’m not certain that is why WW created Simple Start, but it makes sense to me to make things as simple as possible for those just starting out on a weight loss journey. Change can be hard, and why not make it as easy as possible. (Any Weight Watcher member can do Simple Start.) I like Simple Start because I like having the list of food’s that they give you that you can eat and not have to count or write them down. It’s Simple! 

I am enjoying pushing my food journal to the side. I already feel better and I am shedding some of those holiday pounds. I have been stepping on the scale every morning (since the BAD weigh in day) and I am seeing results! Obviously, because of my blog, I still keep a photo journal of what I eat, and I must admit, I do like to see that at the end of the day.

Over the summer and into the Fall, I was getting in some awesome long walks outside. Then the weather got cold……and the outdoor walks seemed to dwindle…..and eventually disappeared completely. With the weather predictions being in the upper 50’s for the day, I knew I was going to get in a good walk outside on Saturday. I asked a friend to join me, knowing I would walk even further if she went. She did, and we walked over 7 miles!!

It felt great to get in a good walk and breathe in the fresh air. I thought I’d be a little sore when I got home, but I felt great! With the single digit weather predictions for the next few days, it’ll likely be a while before that happens outside again.

It feels so good to be back in control and feel the puffiness in my body disappearing. It’s amazing what just a few days of healthy foods can do for a body!

When was the last time you went on a date with your spouse? Mike and I got in a long overdue date night on Saturday night, and we have a full day planned today. The holidays just got crazy and it seemed like we simply were passing each other like roommates! Last night we went to dinner and a movie. We saw American Hustle, the new Bradley Cooper movie. I loved it! It was long, but it definitely kept my interest!

Today, we are going to breakfast, then Church (which we have been really bad about attending) and then some shopping on the Plaza! Looking forward to a fun day together! We both know when we are beginning to feel distant, it’s time to reconnect and set aside some time for the two of us. Then we talk about how we should have done it sooner. 🙂

Well, it was nice to go to a meeting and see a loss for a change. AND, it’s Christmas Week! So I will do a second week of Simple Start and see how it goes. Simple Start is being officially introduced at next week’s meeting, so I’m really excited to see how Joan, my leader, presents it at the meeting and hear what she thinks of it!

I lost a pound and I feel like I ate a lot!

I worked hard on Friday to make sure I was eating only items off of the approved list for Simple Start.  I had plans with friends in the evening, and I planned on using a portion of my 49 points for drinks. The only food that I ate that was not a part of the Simple Start list, was the cheese on my salad for dinner. If I had been paying attention, I would have ordered the salad without the cheese! I was chatting when I ordered and didn’t really think of the cheese as points until just now! This not tracking everything I put in my mouth is going to be a little different!

(If you didn’t read my original post on Simple Start, you don’t have to track the foods that you eat from the approved list. If you do eat foods that are NOT on the approved list, then you do track those, and you are only allowed 49 points per week of those foods.)

I met up with some friends from High School Friday night, one of which I had NOT seen since High School! Another reason for me to love Facebook!

Christmas 2013!

Every year I say, “Now THIS was the best Christmas Ever!” And then it happens again the following year.

I picked up Tess late at the airport on the 23rd and we got in a couple of our favorite Christmas Light Displays just before midnight. It’s hard for me to imagine a Christmas without Candy Cane Lane!

Christmas Eve day was spent preparing for a houseful later! We made mulled cider…..in my Great Grandmother’s Cast Iron Pot!!

We made Christmas Punch, and we set up a bar with a variety of Christmas spirits! We made meatballs with grape jelly and chili sauce in the crockpot (a favorite party food!), and I watched Tess assemble her Gingerbread house.

It was one of those Christmas’s that I just wanted to enjoy every moment and be in the moment, so I didn’t spend a lot of time taking pictures, but everyone else did, so I can steal them and post them later. 🙂

Christmas Day photo’s!!

We had lots of family and extended family over for Christmas Eve! I’d say 30-35 came and went. We had our kids and grandkids come over first to open presents, and as always, it was so much fun to watch everyone open their gifts. This is where I just stopped and watched it all and didn’t take any pictures. After a little play time, we had to clean up and get ready for a houseful! I had a great time having so many people come over, but when you’re the host it’s really difficult to get to talk to any one single person for more than 5 minutes!! I think everyone was gone by 10:30, then Tess and Mike and I got cozy in the living room and watched Tim Allen’s “The Santa Claus”, one of my favorites. Tess and I agree that that’s the way the North Pole really does looks like!

Christmas morning was quiet with just the three of us, well…..and the dogs, but they were exhausted from a houseful, so they were pretty subdued.

I took Tess to the airport in the afternoon, and we talked about me coming to visit her in about three weeks, so no tears necessary. 🙂

On Christmas Evening, we went to some friends house for possibly the BEST Christmas Dinner I have ever had!!

Playing Catch Up

I never did get a blog post written on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, and after reading this post over and over and over, I apologize in advance for the ridiculously boring post that you are about to read. Between a watching a full Season of “Black is the New Orange” and not feeling well, I seem to have lost my sense of humor.

I’ll rest up and try to find the funny in me.

I did go to my Weight Watcher’s meeting on Friday morning, and I learned a LOT! I spent the rest of Friday running last minute errands. Friday night, we did a little spontaneous entertaining. Saturday and Sunday I spent sniffing, coughing, sneezing and sipping a lot of hot tea with honey to sooth my sore throat. Not feeling like doing much, I introduced myself to Netflix. That may have been a mistake. I have now watched the entire season of Orange is the New Black, (all THIRTEEN episodes!). I had a dream last night that I was attacked by a lesbian with a blade. Then I went looking for my girlfriend to help me kick her ass. Too many hours of lady prison? Possibly.

 

Simple Start

After Friday’s Weight Watcher Meeting, I stayed and listened to the presentation on Simple Start. Simple Start is a two week plan of meals that are designed to get you off to the right start. New members and existing members can use Simple Start. You simply eat from the Weight Watcher’s provided list of foods. You do not track and you do not measure. You eat until you are satisfied. These are just a few of the items on the provided list of foods….

Proteins…Eggs, Lean Meats, Fish, etc.

Breads!!!! Light English Muffins and Sandwich thins are just two of the options!

Cereal! You can eat Oatmeal and Unsweetened Shredded Wheat!

Grains and Pasta Too! Just make sure it’s Brown rice, Quinoa or Whole Wheat Pasta!

Vegetables……Even Potatoes!!

Fruits….all of em!

Dairy, as long as it’s Fat Free!

Snacks….Light Microwaved-popped popcorn, Nonfat Cappuccino, Edamame!!!!! And even more…….

There is even a huge list of Condiments and Pantry Staples!!

Sounds kinda scary, huh? The idea is to eat until you are satisfied, and if you eat the suggested foods, which are high in fiber and protein, feeling satisfied should come easily.

Need to indulge a little? Want to have full fat cheese? You can. Want a cookie? You can. Those items you DO need to measure and track, and there is a limit to how much of that you can have. That’s it. Simple. Simple Start.

I must admit, after 4 years of being very aware of how many points I am putting into my mouth (imagine calorie counting for four years, then all of a sudden, you don’t), it is a little strange to just eat and trust the plan. I feel like this came at a good time for me. I was needing a little something different, and I have been eating carbs with a lot of guilt attached to it, so to be able to eat an egg sandwich for breakfast and have popcorn in the afternoon for a snack, and know that I am following all the rules, feels pretty good.

I have weighed each morning, and have remained at 165.

I feel more in control than I did two weeks ago, but I must say for food reasons, and for food reasons only, I am ready for December 26th. My house has been full of trigger foods (crackers, chips and sweets) and I have not been great at dealing with having them in my house. All trigger foods will leave the house on the 26th.

I still have a cough and a sore throat, and I don’t feel super rested, so that kinda stinks, but I am ready for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

I plan to take it easy today, I know the next two days will be full and busy. Maybe more Netflix??

I am going to try this Simple Start for a while and see how it goes.

Ten Pounds

So, I told you that it was bad when I weighed Friday morning, but I didn’t tell you that it was “Ten Pounds” bad.

In the last six to seven weeks, I’ve gained 10 pounds. There. It’s out. The horrible news is now in print. I let myself get off of my plan and eat and drink a lot of things that literally don’t do my body any good at all. I ate things that I didn’t write down. I pretended that I was in control and that I was fine. Now I’m paying the price.

When I weighed 205, and I lost 10 pounds to get me to 195, I really didn’t feel that different. 

195 to 185 did feel a little different.

185 to 175 made me feel more confident about my physical self.

175 to 165? I enjoyed 165 a lot! It was hard to continue my weight loss because I felt so good. I didn’t feel fat. I was feeling pretty normal.

165 to 155? That took forever, but it finally meant new clothes! No more size 12’s. I bought size 8’s! I threw away all of my 12’s!! Never again would I wear a size 12!! I hadn’t weighed in the 150’s since High School.

Today I weigh 165. It does NOT feel good at all. My 8’s are tight, but they are my only option. My shirt untucked is my only option. My face looks full again. My fingers feel puffy. My boobs are not fitting well in my pretty new bra’s.

It’s made me think a lot. I remember being at a WW meeting one time (before I got my weight below 160) and the leader asked us to imagine ourselves at our goal weight. Well, I’d never been there, so I couldn’t really do that. I could try. But I really didn’t know what that “feeling” was like. Then I got my weight below 160, and things did feel different. Then I got to 157, and that felt great. It felt good to “feel” so healthy. Then I got to 154! That was really amazing. I remember how great it felt to just slide my jeans on, with simplicity! It felt awesome to like the way I looked with my shirt untucked, or tucked in! It felt great to feel like I didn’t have this huge belly to conceal. My face looked different. My ankles didn’t feel swollen. When I got out of bed in the morning, by body really felt lighter. It’s crazy to all of a sudden have the 10 pounds back that made such a difference for the first time in the way I really felt physically, and in the way that I saw myself in the mirror. That 10 pounds took me forever to lose, so obviously, I am frustrated with myself.

I did go back in my blog and I did struggle the last two years in November and December like many people do. I have also talked with at least three people in this last week that said that they too have gained 10 pounds through this holiday season. I figure at least I’m not alone.

It’s also made me think a lot about the fact that “bad” foods just really make my body feel “bad”. Why do I do that to myself? Why am I willing to spend a few short minutes, maybe even seconds (really, how long is a bite of food in your mouth?) of pleasure, to do so much harm to my body that makes me feel so bad? I feel sluggish, I feel swollen and puffy, mentally I feel bad about myself. Why would I voluntarily do that? Well, don’t I wish I knew?

I know when I do feel good, it’s easy to put something in my mouth that I know that I shouldn’t, because I think to myself….”How is this one little bite going to make THAT big of a difference?”. “How is one drink going to make me gain any weight?” Then I convince myself that it will be okay to go off of my plan for the night, or for a lunch, or for the day, or for the HOLIDAY?????

It’s all part of me constantly learning. I need to constantly be reminding myself of what I have already learned! I need to practice the things that I know work for me, and to not do the things that I know will make me gain weight!

Now, when my WW Leader tells us to imagine what it feels like to be at our goal weight, I’ll know what that feeling feels like. I was JUST there! Now, I’m on a mission to get back there! 

I had to get that off of my chest.

I have GOT to finish all Christmas shopping today, and wrap it, and be done with it! This is the most unorganized I’ve ever been in the gift department at Christmas!! Thanksgiving being so late in the month, and taking a trip the weekend after, has really got me behind a bit in the Christmas shopping.

It will all get done. It always does. Every year I say…..” Now, THAT was the best Christmas ever!”

In a time crunch, so this post is written a little differently than usual and in a huge hurry. The last two days have not been the best variety of foods. Basically I’ve been eating Chili! Today will be a better variety of foods and I will exercise as much as I did yesterday, because it felt great to walk outside!

 Monday

 I didn’t get my blog post written yesterday, and this morning I overslept, so this is going to be super short. I say that all the time, then I have a story to tell, (like today) and I start typing, then I just keep typing and typing and typing. I’ll likely be late for the Food Truck today!!

I went to the doctor on Monday morning for my girly annual exam. Fun, right? On the way there, I knew I was going to say that I didn’t want to step on the scale, but that I would tell her what I weighed Saturday morning at my WW meeting. I said this at last years appointment, and she (the nurse)  insisted that I step on the scale, but if I didn’t want to look at the number, then I could step on the scale backwards. Um, okay. As I step off of the scale last year, she says my weight out loud as she writes it down! I was so furious, I said nothing. I could feel my face turn beet red from the frustration of it all. I had JUST said I didn’t want to step on their scale, and then she said it out loud like that. Obviously, I share my weight with the world, but what you weigh naked at home, first thing in the morning, and what you weigh fully clothed, three cups of coffee and four hours later, are completely different numbers!! I didn’t say anything to her last year, but when the doctor came in, I talked to her about it. (I think I actually blogged about this when it happened. I’m certain I did. I’ll have to find that.) Anyhow, the doc was great and said….”Oh yeah, she’s kinda particular about the way she does things, but you never have to weigh in if you don’t want to.” I’m like…..”Thank you!!!!”

One year later, (Monday) I walk into the office, she (same nurse) asked me to step on the scale.

Nurse – “Go ahead and step on the scale”

Me – “I’m a WW member, and I just went to a meeting and weighed on Saturday, so I just prefer to tell you my weight.”

Nurse – “I can’t do that, I need you to step on the scale. You can step on the scale backwards so you don’t see the number”

Me – “I don’t want to step on the scale. I know what I weigh and I can just tell you what it is.”

Nurse – “I HAVE to write your weight down in your chart! It’s part of the check-in process!!!”

Me – “I understand. Last year when you told me I could step on the scale backwards, as you wrote down my weight, you also said it out loud. I didn’t appreciate it. Let me tell you what my weight is an you can write it down. I weighed two days ago and I know what I weigh.”

Nurse – heaviest sigh and eye roll I’ve ever witnessed!!

She head’s down the hall. I assume I am to follow. We walk into the exam room.

Me -“Obviously, you are really upset about this. The number on that scale is a very important thing to me that I can’t fully explain to you in a matter of seconds or really even minutes. Can you explain to me why you are making such a big deal out of this and why you can not just write down the number that I tell you? I’m not going to lie to you about my weight. I just want to give you the number from the weight watchers scale two days ago.”

Nurse – “This is my job. I have to write down the number that I see on the scale.””

Me – “The doctor told me last year that I didn’t have to weigh if I didn’t want to.”

Nurse – “If I leave that blank, it looks like I’m not doing my job.”

Me – “Can’t you just write down that the patient refused?”

Nurse – “Yes, but it makes me look lazy, like I’m not doing my job!”

Me – “So, your concern is that someone will think you look lazy, even if you take the time to explain yourself and your patients request, but you don’t care that you’ve made your patient uncomfortable?”

Nurse – “Just forget it!”

She ask me about meds. We are both extremely frustrated, but I can tell she is trying to calm down, as am I.

She takes my blood pressure for the second time.

Me – “Were you preoccupied and forgot to write it down?”

Nurse – “It’s 138 over 85. Is that normal?”

Me – “No. It’s usually 110 over 65. I’m very upset right now.”

 

I tell the doc my story when she comes in, for the second year in a row. She say’s she’s sorry, and that it’s a good thing I didn’t step on the scale because she KNOWS that scales weighs heavy anyway!!!

Okay, that’s my Monday story.

Tuesday

Mike and his co-workers are having a chili cook off today, and his “Team” came over here last night with spouses to cook their chili. We had a great time. I did indulge in two glasses of wine and perhaps a shot of RumChata. I decided to entertain with shots. We all seemed to be on the same page because one of the couples showed up with these!

They’re called baby beers!

But the chili the team made?? Holy Chili! It was made with KC Strip and Bacon! It had Green Peppers and Brown Sugar! It was deeeelish!!! Good Luck Team! I totally forgot to take a picture, but it was thick and chunky and yummy!

I know where I am at on my points, but literally have to get out the door. I ate little yesterday, I walked over 5 miles, I drank a ton of water, I drank 2 glasses of wine. Not the best “Healthy” choices, not the worst “Healthy” choices. Today will be a perfect day.

The Mind is a Powerful Thing

Have I mentioned in the last two post how I feel in control? Oh good. The mind really can be such a powerful thing!

We had plans to go to the dinner theatre on Sunday afternoon, and aside from being a little nervous about the food choices, I was really looking forward to the show!

This was a great play, and his co-star was his real life wife of 35 years! The show was a cute little comedy and it was a great way to spend a December Sunday afternoon relaxing after spending the week in the hustle and bustle of the Christmas shopping crowd.

I was worried there would be nothing point friendly on the buffet. I had coffee and a banana in the morning, then ate some protein before we left the house around 11:00. While seated at the dinner theatre, we were served our salad with dressing on the side. I chose the Vinaigrette over the Ranch, and used maybe 1 tsp of dressing? I basically ate a dry salad. When it was time for the buffet, I passed on the pasta and something else that looked creamy and delicious. I passed on the fried cauliflower, which smelled yummy, I passed on the fried fish, (which Mike said was the best tasting thing on his plate!) I passed on the beef, I passed on the dinner rolls, I had a small portion of polenta, some chicken and veggies and about 3 tablespoons of mashed potatoes on my plate. The vegetables were really good, but did taste pretty buttery. We all skipped dessert, and I literally drank a pot of coffee all by myself. I do love my coffee, and it was nice to have an entire pot on the table to myself!

I never made it to the treadmill in the morning, so I decided while watching the Chiefs game, I would get on the treadmill and the time would fly by! Well, that didn’t happen either. I sat and watched the game a little, but mostly I was all over the house getting more Christmas things done and preparting for a houseful on Tuesday evening. Mike and some of his co-workers are having a Chili cook off on Thursday at work, and Mike’s “Team” is coming over here Tueday night to cook their team’s chili together. They are bring spouses and we are making a night of it! Since I decorated so much for Chiristmas, I’m looking forward to entertaining. 🙂

All that being said, at 9:30, I was tired and I really just wanted to crawl into bed. You know what i did instead? I can’t believe it either, but i couldn’t let myself go to bed before getting on that damn treadmill. I ran/walked for just over 30 minutes, then did about 10 minutes of stretching! Of course, then I was wide awake, but it didn’t matter. I had a plan, I followed through, and it felt great. My mind was made up.
