Archives For July 2014

Okay, it really was just for a few days…..but it was a total reminder of how many things I use that thing for! I forget, it’s NOT just a phone!!

My iPhone died on Thursday. I had accidentally placed it in a cup of water a couple of weeks ago, and it had continued to work, well, kinda. I guess the water damage caught up with it, and it did eventually die.

I was oddly looking forward to going to the lake for the weekend and taking a break from my phone. While at the lake, I realized not having my phone also meant not having my camera,  not having my music, not having my WW app, and not having my GPS for my walk…so I don’t know exactly how far I walked or for how long.

I was fine with taking a break from the social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, but I realized I was also the first one to shout “Tag Me in the pictures on Facebook!”…….so maybe I did miss having my phone just a little bit.

Tess sent me a text with a picture of these two Facebook post, hers and mine, on the same day. We really are a lot alike, even when we wish we weren’t!!

After finding a Free phone yesterday (Facebook is so handy!!) through a friend that had a old spare that she wasn’t using, I now seem to be back to my cell phone life!

Tess, however, is still in cell phone distress.

I got in an awesome 75 minute Yoga class yesterday, but I procrastinated my mile run all day long, and it never did happen.

Here are yesterday’s eats that includes an AWESOME Chicken Marinade!

Dinner

A few weeks ago, I made Marinated Greek Chicken Skewers from ahintofhoney.com! They were delicious! Yesterday, I had all of the ingredients, but the chicken breast that I had purchased were sliced in half, making very thin pieces of chicken. I thought they seemed to thin to mess with putting on a skewer, so I made the marinade for the skewers, marinated the chicken breast, and cooked them on the grill for a bit. I served them with the Tzatziki sauce that I buy at Costo. If you’ve never had it, it’s the cucumber dill sauce that you would find on a Gyro! It’s soooo good!

This is the marinade for the recipe for the Marinated Greek Chicken Skewers

1.5 lb Chicken Breast

4 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil, divided

4 garlic cloves, crushed

1-2 tsp. dried oregano

1 tsp. salt

1 tsp. ground black pepper

2 Tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice

Mix 2 T. of Olive Oil, the garlic, oregano, salt and pepper together and marinade the chicken for at least 30 minutes. Combine the lemon juice with the remaining 2 T. of Olive Oil and brush this on the chicken while you are grilling it. They cooked quickly because they were cut so thin, and they were absolutely delicious! They were nice and tender, and the sauce gave everything a great finish!

I decided to fix the vegetables that I had bought in a foil bag on the grill. I hadn’t done this before and it was much easier than I was expecting!

I combined 1/4 C. of Olive Oil and 1/4 C. of Balsamic Vinegar and poured over the veggies in a big foil boat!

Then I gave them a good dose of Cavender’s Seasoning.

I grilled these for about 10 minutes! Perfect!

We had a great long weekend at the Lake!

I love it when Mike can get away from work and relax a little. We did go to the lake with his work friends, so obviously there were a few “work” discussions, but for the most part, we all just relaxed and had a great weekend!

The boys golfed Friday morning and afternoon while Rebecca and I took a long walk that involved a few challenging hills, grabbed a few groceries, then chilled on the dock!

photo 1

Friday evening was filled with a yummy lasagne dinner and wine, several laughs and early to bed!

Saturday morning, I took another long walk that included some good hills, worked up a good sweat, and then we all went out on this baby!

After a nice boat road, we ended up at our destination….Back Water Jack’s!

Here…lunch and drinks (ordered by their name….”pain in the ass”) were consumed that led to a little afternoon craziness.

This….my friends….is the drink called a “Pain in the Ass”

After a brief nap on my balcony, looking over the festivities below me, I assembled my Chicken Taco Bar for our evening dinner, and again, I was in bed before 10:00!!

Sunday was a nice relaxing morning with coffee in bed, followed by breakfast and a little group clean up, then we headed out towards home before noon. A couple of our friends, Tim and Rebecca, rode with us and we decided to finish our long weekend with lunch and a beer at the Martin City Brewery.

My phone officially crapped out on me on Thursday, so the pictures that I DO have, I stole.

Guess where I’ll be spending my day??? Hello Verizon store……

When I got into bed on Friday night at the lake, I tracked what I had to eat and drink. My phone was broken, but I have the app on my iPad, so I decided to take it along. At the end of the day on Friday, I had consumed 79 points!!!! I about died. We did sip on drinks ALL day, followed by a lasagna dinner. I drank at LEAST 8 bottles of water and kept encouraging everyone else to do the same.  I took veggies and hummus, lots of fruit, and I had an egg white sandwich before we left the house on Friday morning.

For dinner Friday night, I had planned to only eat half of a piece of lasagne. I did not cut my piece in half. I ate the bread that accompanied the lasagne, and I drank the wine. After realizing how many points I had eaten, I planned to be more cautious on Saturday. Well, that’s what I planned.

I was in charge of the breakfast on Saturday morning, and I ended up eating more than I should have. I continued to drink water ALL day long on Saturday and I was really glad that I had walked that morning. At Back Water Jack’s, I passed on the “Pain in The Ass” drink that everyone else ordered, (it was the sole reason that we were going to this particular bar) and ordered a Bud Light. Someone ordered a “Pain in the Ass” for me, (or there was conveniently a spare one?) and I let myself get sucked into the fun, and I drank it. I’m not blaming anyone else at all, but I can really cave when it is literally sitting in front of me. Sometimes NOT doing what the rest of the crowd is doing….can be uncomfortable, or it just draws too much attention. It’s just easier at times to go with the flow. Yes, I do realized that is all about ME, and no one else. Round two was ordered…..by my husband….who was now feeling quite happy! I drank it. A third round was ordered “to go”. I drank it. Again, not blaming anyone but myself, and completely admitting to my weakness when it comes to the social drinking and the party atmosphere.

I didn’t track my Saturday points.

Here I am again on a Monday morning trying hard to just remember that I had a great, fun long weekend, and not beat myself up about what I ate and drank.

I have learned for certain, that in MY home, on MY schedule, in MY kitchen, I can be successful.

On vacation, when surrounded by a relaxed and fun atmosphere that includes beverages, food and friends, I am weak at making the healthy choices, and I just want to join the crowd and not make a big deal out of being a Weight Watcher.

It’s a battle that I’m constantly fighting.

Lake Bound!

July 24, 2014

We are headed to the lake for a long weekend with some of Mike’s co-workers. Rebecca, my running partner, and my wine trip partner, and one of my favorite girls, will be there along with her husband, Tim! Tim and Mike have been friends since junior high, but they also happen to work together!

Rebecca and I plan to walk every morning, and she’s a healthy eater, so that will make healthy choices so much easier! However, we can each talk each other into “just one more drink” too!

Mike and I have dinner and breakfast for one day, so I’ve planned a Chicken Taco Bar for dinner and a Light Breakfast Casserole for breakfast. Lunch will be out and about at a fun Lake Bar, where I will be challenged by beverages and fries!!!

I’ve got my workout clothes packed for long morning walks, I’m taking lots of water and lots of fruits and veggies for snacking. At least I do have a plan.

Tucker is being boarded for the first time since we’ve had him. I’m feeling a little weird about it, but we are boarding him with the trainer that we have been working with, so maybe this will be a really good experience for all involved?

Keeping it short today! I’ve got veggies to cut up, chicken to cook, Yoga to go to, a ONE mile run to get in, and I’m taking my Little Sis, Samone, to the Nelson-Atkins Museum today!

We’re leaving EARLY in the morning for the lake so the boys can get in a Ozarks golf game, and then we can get out on the boat, my favorite part!!

I’ll see you all Monday morning!

“love the life you live, live the life you love”

A little over four months ago, I wrote two blog post about Overeater’s Anonymous.

You can click on the link’s below if you would like to reread them, or read them for the first time.

Overeater’s Anonymous, Part I

Overeater’s Anonymous, Part II

I never did any kind of a follow up post about OA, so I thought I probably should. I was asked several questions after writing those post that I wasn’t sure how to answer. I feel like I can explain now why I went to OA, and what I got out of that experience.

I had gotten to my lowest weight in October of 2013, then gained some weight. Towards the end of February, I was feeling really bad about myself. I decided to attend those OA meetings to see exactly what was discussed and to see if I thought that I belonged there, in addition to my WW meetings? Did I actually have a food addiction? I thought that I probably did, but I wasn’t really sure. After attending a few meetings, I realized that I did have a lot in common with a lot of the people in attendance at the OA meetings, so I went to a variety of meetings, twice a week, for about three weeks. At the end of the three weeks, I decided not to go to anymore of those meetings because I realized that I was getting all of the support and the information that I needed at my weekly WW meetings.

Attending the meetings did make me realize how real, how powerful, and how destructive food addiction can be. After listening to other people share at the meetings, I realized how far I had come in handling my own Food Demons.

Have I successfully learned how to deal with all of the Food Demons when they interfere with my life? Nope.

Have I successfully learned how to accept myself and be proud of the healthy choices that I make? Absolutely!!

Food Addiction is a real thing, and if you think that you need help or support, OA is a great place to go for that support, and it is free.

Click HERE to go the Overeater’s Anonymous Website.

I’ve never attended a WW meeting where we have discussed “Food Addiction”, but we do regularly discuss how to handle situations where one might be tempted to overeat. We’ve discussed everything from emotional eating to eating out of boredom and learning how to handle social situations, whether it be a party or a simple lunch with co-workers or friends.

The most difficult time for me, when I am tempted to overeat, has always been when I am alone. I have tools that I use, but I think it’s simply something I will always struggle with. I plan to attend my weekly WW meeting as long as Weight Watcher’s is around. The support is incredible and I’ve learned so much.

If you are interested in joining Weight Watchers, I highly recommend it and would be happy to answer any questions.

I Love My Frothy Coffee!

July 22, 2014

Cafe au lait (French for “coffee with milk”) is a French coffee drink. The meaning of the term differs between Europe and the United States: in both cases it means some kind of coffee with hot milk added, in contrast to white coffee, which is coffee with room temperature milk or other whitener added.

photo

During my brief stint as a Barista at Starbuck’s, I learned a LOT about coffee and a lot of the different ways that you can make it AND drink it!

One of my favorite coffee drinks is a Cafe au lait. I like the taste, AND it cost less than a latte if you are buying it at a coffee shop. At Starbuck’s, they call this coffee drink a Misto.

After realizing my coffee budget was a little out of control, I decided to start making yummy coffee drinks at home.

I have one of these every morning and I love it!

First, you’ll need a milk frother!

I bought my milk frother at Target, and I know they sell them at Bed Bath and Beyond. I’m sure you could find one at Walmart or Kohl’s or lot’s of other stores too! Mine was $40 at Target. I looked yesterday, and they still sell them.

Here’s how I make my yummy morning coffee!

Pour about 1/2 cup of skim milk into the frother and Power On! While the milk is frothing, make yourself a cup of coffee. If you like it sweet, then add your sweetener.

You can really mix this cup of coffee up with different flavored coffee’s and flavored sweeteners. Today I am making Cinnamon Flavored coffee with a little vanilla sweetener, and topping it off with a dash of cinnamon!

photo 1

Once the milk is ready to go, add it to your cup of coffee!

Top that with a dash of cinnamon. Give it a stir and enjoy!

This past Fall, I was loving the Dunkin Donuts Pumpkin Spice Coffee with the Vanilla Creme SweetLeaf drops and a dash of Pumpkin Pie Spice to top it off! So Good!!

Friday

It was a great day on Friday for a lot of reasons, but mostly because I got to pick up my daughter at the airport!  She moved to Dallas a year and a half ago with a great job opportunity at Southwest Airlines, and because she works there, we get FREE Flights! I can’t imagine her living that far away and her and I not getting to see each other as often as we do! I’m already excited to go Dallas next month for her birthday!!

We always stop somewhere on the way home from the airport, have a bite to eat, and get caught up. That’s exactly what we did!

Saturday

It was the Bowl for Kid’s Sake with Big Brother Big Sister on Saturday! I was so glad that Tess could come in town because she had not yet had the opportunity to meet my Little Sis, Samone!

photo 1

It was great to take Samone to this event and have her meet some of my closest friends too! The event was a success and we all had a blast keeping track of Gutter Balls!!

Look! Pancakes, Sausage, Eggs and solo cup’s full of BEER!!

photo 2

After bowling, most of our little bowling team went to lunch, then Tess and I spent the afternoon on the deck enjoying a little wine, a little goofiness and the awesome weather!

photo 3

In the evening, some friends of ours came over and we played Cards Against Humanity! Have you played before?? I had not and that game is so inappropriate!! My stomach hurt all day Sunday from laughing so hard Saturday night!

photo 4

Sunday

We slept in, (I mean like REALLY slept in….it was awesome!)  then went out for brunch. Tess decided to take the last flight home at around 10:00 pm, so it was nice to have her stick around for the whole day!

How Did I Eat?

Friday was an awesome day that included my ONE mile run and lots of fruits and veggies, and water, but I won’t bore you with every picture of everything I ate all weekend, although I do have the pictures….and even though I had already had dinner when I picked up Tess from the airport, I ordered the veggie plate that I like on their menu, and I shared the whipped cauliflower with Tess, and she was kind enough to throw her pickles on my plate!!

photo 4

On Saturday morning, I headed out the door at 6:30 am for a ONE mile run and a one mile walk. Then I had egg whites and fruit at home, and skipped the Pancakes, Eggs, Sausage and beer that they fed us at the bowling alley. I did take a bite of Tess’ pancakes, and they were DELISH!!!

We went out for Mexican food for lunch after our morning bowling session and I ordered one chicken enchilada and had a few chips and guacamole and water.  Our dinner was whatever I could find in the fridge at our unexpected game night! I did a pretty good job of pulling out all of the veggies and humus, our neighbors grabbed a frozen pizza from their freezer and we found an awesome Trader Joe’s Arugula pizza in our freezer that I forgot that we had!  I also pulled out some popcorn and almonds and wine!! I snacked on the almonds and drank more than needed, so I am just going to say that I used up my extra 49 points for the week, and that it was worth it!

Sunday at brunch I ordered an egg white omelet, had lots of fruit, and did indulge in one Bloody Mary and shared a few sips of a beer with Tess.

We didn’t eat again until dinner, and that was the awesome Chicken Parmesan recipe that I love from Skinnytaste.com, served over zucchini noodles.

photo 3

On Sunday, I did not get in my one mile run.

The rest of this week is filled with activity plans, so I’m not worried about it. Today I am running and mowing. Tuesday and Thursday I am going to Yoga along with running my ONE mile. On Wednesday I will run my mile and then hop on the bicycle!

I had an awesome weekend and I hope YOU all did too!

“love the life you live, live the life you love”

It really was a great Weight Watcher’s Week! I got in a lot of activity, I ate a lot of fruits and veggies. I had a good attitude, and I successfully faced a few challenges along the way.

I made a couple of new recipes too! Peaches and Creme Oatmeal, and Eggplant Parmesan!

I pumped up the tires on my bike and got in a ride. More of that to come for sure!!

I was going to a Happy Hour last night, and I was trying to “Fill Up” before I went by eating a few things at home and drinking lots of water. The good part here is that I didn’t eat ONE bite of food at the Happy Hour, but then I came home and ate dinner, after already filling up on the snack’s that I had before I went! I was really active this week, so I had room for a few extra points to consume. But, I ate way too much before I went simply trying to prepare myself to not eat there and I probably would have been fine NOT eating dinner when I came home. OR…. I could have just eaten dinner before I went. All in all, I had a successful week, and learned a few more things along the way.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Pancake

Ingredients

1/4 Dry Oats

3 Egg Whites

1/2 Ripe Banana, mashed

1 tsp Cocoa Powder

2 T. PB2 Powder, Chocolate Flavor

1/4 tsp Vanilla Extract

1 Packet Truvia (optional)

Toppings

1/2 Banana, Sliced

1 T. Better n’ Peanut Butter (Or nut butter of your choice!)

Directions

Add all ingredients to a blender. Pulse just a few times (or combiner really well with a whisk in a bowl).

Heat a nonstick skillet over medium low heat. Spray with nonstick cooking spray. Pour batter onto heated skillet and cook for about 3 minutes. I have a very large spatula (this pancake is 6-7 inches in diameter!!) that made this easy to flip. I think blending the batter made it all stick together well on the skillet! Cook for about an additional 2 minutes.

Exercising With Your Dog

July 17, 2014

Yesterday I was in a huge hurry to write my blog and get out the door to the DMV. I failed to mention in my blog that I did NOT get in a ONE mile run on Tuesday. I did however walk 6.8 Miles and ride my bike 3 miles. I was just not feeling it after that. Lesson learned. ALWAYS run first. 🙂

Oh, and speaking of running, I blogged about signing up to run a 10K on July 4th, and due to a schedule conflict, that did NOT happen. I am currently looking into adding another 5K to my list though, and hopefully, before the summer is over, my friend Rebecca and I will get in a 10K too!

I did get my ONE mile run in on Wednesday. I decided to see how Tucker would do on a run with me.  I see people running with their dogs all the time. My dogs are little, so I wasn’t really sure how long those little short legs would be able to keep up with me! I think Mishka is too old to try, but she can stick right with me and Tucker on a 2 mile walk with no problem at all!

Tucker and I headed out the door in the evening. The weather has been gorgeous, just gorgeous! Once I figured out just how much leash to give him so that tripping over him or the leash wasn’t an issue, we got a nice rhythm going and we were on our way. I seem to be most comfortable with a 12 minute mile, although I have discovered if I really want to, I can comfortably do it in 10 minutes. Tucker and I together did our mile in just over 12 minutes. We’ll work on improving that pace together. After our run, we kept up a good pace and walked an additional 2.3 Miles. He slept the rest of the evening.

Do YOU run with your dog??

I ate more points than I wanted to yesterday, (the pasta tasted really really good!) however I am still within my points for the week. Today is the last day of my WW Week, and I know it was a successful week on the scale! I will focus on getting in lots of fruits and veggies today!

Here are yesterday’s eats!

These were delicious! No regrets.)

Rent My Dog….For Free!

July 15, 2014

What a whacky day!

At noon, the Dog Trainer came to my house. We are on week six of dog training. I have to say, behavior has changed….there is less barking….he now waits for permission to get on the furniture….he has limited access to upstairs and downstairs….he comes to me on command (well, for the most part), but Tucker still wants to poop in the house (twice this week!) and he has now developed some terrible anxiety about being “gated” in the kitchen! This has resulted in tearing into the dog food/treat cabinet and scratching up the kitchen cabinets in the process! Since I don’t want the kitchen torn up, I’m back to letting him roam the first floor while I am gone. I don’t really know how else to handle that, and apparently, neither does the trainer.

The trainer is expensive, and they do have a money back guarantee, which I have inquired about. No doubt, if Tucker does continue to poop in the house, and shows NO improvement in that area, they will gladly give me my money back. But thats not what I want. I want my dog to poop outside!

Now we are trying one feeding a day instead of two, some relaxing drops in his water for his newly developed anxiety, which will probably go away anyhow now that I’m not limiting him to the kitchen while I am gone,  and I am misting essential oils over his dog bed at night. I am NOT even kidding. Yesterday I purchased new food because the OTHER new food I bought, doesn’t seem to agree with his tummy. Pleeeeeeasssseeeeee.

While on my beautiful and breezy walk yesterday, I was thinking a lot about Tucker, (and how lucky that little turd is that I love him so darn much) when I thought….I wonder how many people get a dog, not knowing how much work and responsibilities they can be, and then they get rid of them.

That’s the moment I thought of it!

Rent My Dog…For Free!

I’m thinking……I put the word out in the neighborhood…(it’s a big neighborhood) that if anyone is contemplating buying a dog as a family pet, and can’t really decide, that they simply Rent My Dog…For Free! This way, I get a little break, Tucker gets to play with a bunch of kids, a family (let’s be real….Mom) that thinks it’s no big deal to own a dog get’s a reality check on just how much work one dog MIGHT be, and Tucker poop’s in someone else’s house for a couple of weeks!! WIN WIN!!! Right? Genius?? I think so.

I love it! I’m pondering my Facebook post about it right now!

My iPhone Disaster

While running errands, I set my phone in my cup holder, like I always do. Unfortunately, my cup holder had an actual cup in it, full of water, and no lid. About a full minute later, I happened to look at my phone, realized what was happening, and grabbed it! I was literally shaking water out of it! About two hours later, I made it to the Verizon store, where I absolutely LOVE all of the employees. Adrian helped me. He remembered helping me buy my first iPhone over a year ago when my daughter was with me, AND he remembered that my daughter worked for Southwest Airlines! While I went out to dinner, he kept my phone, put it in the sun and dried it out, recharged it, sent me a text on my husbands phone to tell me that it was working, then since he was getting off work, he BROUGHT IT TO ME AT THE RESTAURANT!!!! Now THAT my friend, is some KICK ASS customer service!! Dontcha think?? Mike tipped him. He refused, but Mike insisted. I just wanted to hug him.

Birthday Dinner

We took one of our daughter’s to dinner for her birthday. Her husband had to work, but the kids came along! I made everyone pose for a selfie outside the restaurant!

After the birthday dinner, I borrowed a Black Light from a friend, on the advice of my dog trainer, to see if there are any pee stains on the carpet.

WARNING!!!

DO NOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU ARE MENTALLY PREPARED FOR WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE! I WAS NOT PREPARED!!

I really really really wanted a drink. Instead, I went to bed and had nightmares.

That wraps up my whacky day! Here are yesterday’s eats!
