Archives For December 2014

2015, Bring It!

December 31, 2014

One of the great benefits to having a blog is being able to go back through your year, just as you would in a journal I suppose. You can see where you shined, see where you were a bit dull, see what fun things you did, reflect on your reflecting, and of course, see what you would like to do different the following year.

I read, I Welcome You, 2014 last night, and it was a great reminder for me of how successful I was in my health in 2013 and what I did to get there, but it also reminded me that 2013 was one of those years that I was ready to put on the shelf for reasons that had nothing to do with my health.

2014 has been a difficult year for me with my weight going up, and accepting how I truly struggle with the food demons, but so many other aspects of my life were really great!

Here is a recap and a few Highlights of 2014.

After feeling the physical affects of the Holiday drinks and eats last January, a friend suggested that I try going Gluten Free and Dairy Free with her for 21 days, so I did. At the end of the 21 days, I felt great! It made me much more aware of how many foods had gluten in them, and it also made me aware of just how much diary I was eating! I was also experiencing some aches and pains as well, and the gluten free, dairy free diet, seemed to help my body feel better as a whole!

I tried after that to pay more attention to gluten, although I was not gluten free by any means, and I tried to pay more attention to how often I was eating dairy and how it made me feel.

You can read my blog post,  Gluten Free, Dairy Free, to see how I felt after trying it out last year.

Our daughter, Kate, gave birth to our fourth grandchild, Baby Charlotte. I was actually in the delivery room and got to watch that little angel come into the world!

Mike and I took a great trip to Mexico with friends.

I wrote a blog post, 100 Random Things About Me, and realized I’m kinda weird.

My daughter, Tess, and I were deep into our Couch to 5K training for The Color Run that we were going to be participating in in Dallas in April, so I decided to sign up for a race with a friend in Kansas City, and see just how well my training was working for me. I did the 4 Mile St. Paddy’s Day run with a friend and I averaged a 12 minute Mile (some walking). Not too shabby for a girl that’s never run before!

I had the privilege of Baby Sitting Charlotte Monday through Friday for the entire month of April!

Tess and I RAN the entire Color Run 5K in Dallas and we were extremely proud of ourselves!

I actually ended up running TWO other 5K’s in April as well!

As much as I would like to say I was feeling AWESOME about myself, I was struggling a lot with the 10 pounds that I had gained since the Holidays and our Vacation to Mexico. I was obsessing about failing. In all of my reflecting, I decided to attend a few OA meetings. I wrote two post about my feelings on OA (Over Eater’s Anonymous).

Overeater’s Anonymous, Part I

Overeater’s Anonymous, Part II

One of my goals for the year was to get involved in the Big Brother Big Sister Organization. I filled out all of the paper work early in the year, and by May, I was matched up with my Little Sis, Samone. You can read all about our first meeting HERE! Becoming involved in this organization was one of the best decisions I’ve made in a long time!

Mike and I celebrated our 15th Anniversary with an awesome Wine Trip with friends to Napa Valley!

I decided to start going to Yoga classes and I am so glad that I did.

June and July

I really do love my doggie, Tucker, but he has been a lot of work for the three years that we have had him. I finally hired a trainer. Tucker has a great attitude and disposition, but he was never been properly house trained before coming to live with us when he was 1 1/2. It was becoming more and more of a problem.

I wrote this post, My Top Five Favorite Breakfast, and they are ALL still my favorite!

I wrote an update to my OA post. Overeater’s Anonymous, Update

August was a fairly quiet month, (according to my blog post), but I enjoyed a long weekend at the lake with some friends, and I went to Dallas for a long weekend to celebrate my daughters 23rd birthday!

September was much more exciting than August. I took an awesome trip with some old friends. You can read my blog post, Beach House, Girlfriends for all of the details. I am hoping it was the first annual of many more Girlfriend Trips to the Beach House!

Thanks to Instagram, I’ve discovered an awesome support group of healthy eaters and people that like to exercise and challenge each other. After following one particular person that challenged herself to Run 100 Miles in August, I decided to challenge myself to walk 100 miles in the month of September, and I succeeded!

The month literally flew by with all of the Kansas City Royals Baseball excitement! It really was a great month to live in Kansas City!

Our son Jake, and his wife Jordan, bought their first home!

After going through TWO Dog Trainers and lots of Trials and Errors, Tucker is now in a crate anytime that we are not home, and he still shakes each and every time that I put him in it. I feel so bad for him that he has such anxiety about it, but I love not coming home to poop or pee on my carpet!

The crate at night was NOT working because he would just cry, then bark, then howl, so believe it or not, Tucker now sleeps on a five foot leash, attached to me, on our bed. This is not a joke. Hey, it’s working, and again, no poop or pee on my carpet.

I was having some kind of Quinoa craziness, so I came up with 10 different ways that I like to eat it and put them all together in this blog post, Quinoa Bowls!

As full and as exciting as the month was, I found time to redecorate The Master Bedroom, and I LOVE it!

November is my birthday month and I am a firm believer of celebrating your birthday all month long.

I took a short and unexpected trip with a girlfriend to Scottsdale, Arizona the first week in November, and I had the Best Day Ever! We stayed at the Omni, and there is where I met Heather. I adored Heather right from the start! She works at the gym at the Omni. She was my guide for an awesome hike up Camelback Mountain, and for many reasons, that will be a day that will stick out in my mind for a really long time thanks to her!

Our Daugher, Anne, had been discussing opening her own salon with her coworker, Becca. They decided to go for it, and after lots of hard work and planning, they opened up in November! I am so very proud of her! Check out her Facebook Page! The Beauty Room

Our son Jake and our daughter in law, Jordan went to Ecuador this year to make a video for amputee’s that are in need of prosthetics, but can not afford them. They have a friend, Pat, that now lives in Ecuador and works for a non profit organization that is trying to help as many amputee’s as possible obtain prosthetics. Jake and Jordan filmed, produced and released this video, Movilidad, this weekend. I encourage you to watch it! They did an amazing job!

All four of our children are in a really good place in their lives right now, and as parents, I can’t think of a better feeling than knowing that your children are happy.

Probably my most read blog post, and certainly the post that I had the most comments on since I began blogging, was this post,  I Don’t Have a Weight Problem, I Have a Food Problem.

I still don’t have it all figured out. I’ll always be a work in progress. I will continue to aim at making myself a better person.

Here’s Looking into 2015!

I felt so great last year at the end of January, that I am going No Gluten, No Dairy again for a full month.

This is a full list of what I am cutting out for the month of January.

Artificial Sweeteners

Red Meat

This sounds drastic for me, I know. But right now my body feels like a junk drawer, and I need to clean out the junk. I cleaned out the fridge and the pantry, and filled them with good things. I want to do the same thing for my body. I’m not giving these things up forever, but I like a challenge, and what better time to clean out the junk drawer, than January 1st!

I’m looking forward to blogging about this experience! (Besides, how boring would this blog be if i didn’t try new things once in a while?)

I have thought long and hard about my lifestyle and my love of socializing with food and drinks (alcohol)  and how it can often get in the way of my goals. I’ve stopped drinking for short periods of time, and it has proven to be successful in working through plateaus for me. As difficult as I always think that it will be, I am always surprised at how it really isn’t that big of a deal. The most difficult part of not drinking is actually just thinking about a social event and the anticipation of not drinking at it. Once I’m there, the no drinking typically isn’t that big of a deal. Then when its all over, I feel so proud of myself, it’s completely worth it. It’s kinda like Peanut M&M’s for me I guess. If I just don’t put them in my mouth, I’m good. But the taste of one, just makes me want more. But the drinking is worse, because after three glasses of wine, I begin to make poor food choices.

Okay, all of that being said, I’ve played with a lot of ideas for a Socializing Plan for 2015. I have come to a decision that I think is very realistic for me. For ONE YEAR, I will choose one event per month that I will drink at. At the end of the year, I know it will feel so good to be able to say that I only drank 12 days of the entire year. (I’ve drank 12 days out of the last 15!)

I’ve already gone over the calendar in my head and I know that the summer will be difficult with lake trips and neighborhood driveway get togethers, the Fall will be tough with football and fire pits, and the holiday months will be tough with parties and socializing, but I just keep thinking about how good I will feel about myself after one full year of limiting what I drink. I’m not cutting myself off entirely, I’m just making a choice that will ultimately affect my overall health, and isn’t that what this is all about anyhow?

This is What I Will Accomplish in 2015

  1. I  Will Choose One Occasion Per Month for Social Drinking
  2. I will go no more than two days in a row without some sort of exercise. (unless I’m sick)
  3. I will track every single day for the entire year. No matter what. I’ll track if I eat 26 points, I’ll track if I eat 76 points.
  4. I will RUN in a minimum of six 5K’s

These next two have nothing to do with my health, and I haven’t committed to them yet, but I have thought about both of them for the last two years, and am seriously considering….

  1. Painting One Full Wall in the Basement with Chalkboard Paint for the Grandkids to draw on! (and me!)
  2. Take Piano Lessons (my grandma’s piano just sits in our living room, and I feel that it needs some love)

This is going to be one very interesting year!

Mike says that he is super excited about all of the money that we’ll save with me not drinking!! Yep. He really said that! I failed to mention that I’ll likely spend all of that money in therapy! Wine drinking with girl friends is really good therapy!!

What Do You Plan to Accomplish in 2015?

Trash Day!

December 30, 2014

Oh, Blog….I do miss you when I’m gone. it’s just that sometimes you are not at the top of the priority list, but the Holidays are now over (well, almost) and I can get back to my routine, and you and I can reunite.

When I do a big fridge and pantry clean out, I like to do it on Monday because Tuesday is Trash Day! I suppose this has more meaning in the summer months when the garage can get really hot, and the trash can become really stinky with food in it, but none the less, cleaning out the fridge the day before trash day is a habit that I have formed that keeps the fridge from becoming an unorganized mess of foods that no longer need to be in there! I do try hard not to let too many foods go bad, but this “trash day” had more to do with Holiday foods that HAD TO GO!

I tossed all candies, chocolates, cookies, sweet breads, crackers, chips, dips, coffee creamers and anything with a date that said it must go!

Then I went to the grocery store and stocked up on fruits and veggies! Two of the containers in my fridge now have cooked chicken and cooked quinoa in them.

The trash is gone and the good stuff is back! Yay Trash Day!

After organizing the fridge and the pantry, I actually got outside and walked 6 miles with a friend! After that, I took my pups for a one mile walk. It was a bit chilly, but not windy, so tolerable.

Merry Christmas!

December 25, 2014

I hope you all are enjoying your Christmas and Holiday Season this year!

I picked up my daughter, Tess, from the airport early Tuesday morning and we have been keeping busy since.

For as long as I can remember, Tess and I have taken one night each Christmas Season and drove the car all over town looking at Christmas lights with a cup of Hot Cocoa. This year was no different, except for the way in which we did it. Typically we are in our cozy clothes and ready for bed. This year we had a two hour dinner while sharing a bottle of wine.

(wine and dumplings)

After dinner, we took our tour. Tess said it was one of her most memorable evenings that her and I have ever spent together. 🙂

(We asked FOUR different groups of people on the Plaza to take our picture and they all turned out fuzzy. Could be my camera, could be us.)

We had a big Pajama Party last night for Christmas Eve, but before the entire family showed up (grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins….) we had lots of fun taking pictures with the kids!

Today, more pajamas, brunch here with me and Mike and Tess, then Christmas movies on the couch.

2015 Goals to come soon!

“love the life you live, live the life you love”

I am loving being a Big Sis to Samone. I’ve never had a sister before, and neither has she! Samone and I were matched up in May, and we really are a good match. I like to be silly and have a good time, and she seems to enjoy watching me do just that.

We do more than just act silly, we’ve had some really good talks, she has met a lot of my family, we’ve enjoyed some arts and crafts, and we are already planning what we will do on our one year anniversary together!

Samones birthday is a few days after Christmas and she will be out of town for Christmas and her birthday, so we celebrated last night, just the two of us. She will be 13 and I thought it would be fun for her to get to do something kind of grown up, so we had a “Girls Night Out”.

I made a reservation at a restaurant (which just that alone, she seemed to think was really cool) on the Plaza, kinda of the place to be in Kansas City, especially at Christmas. As we were seated, she said she already liked the place. We went to Houston’s, where it is rather dark inside, and she told me she loved the lighting! Sometimes she seems much older than 13!

We shared a yummy appetizer of spinach dip and chips. We were both starving!

While we waited for dinner, (The dinner part was her birthday present) I gave her a Christmas Stocking that I had filled with goodies. Each item had a little meaning behind it from times that we have spent together. She made it clear to me as she pulled out each item, that she knew why I had picked it out. Sometimes she really surprises me and makes me smile.

She was excited to order her filet, (I knew she liked steak, and I asked her if she would like to go out for a steak dinner for her birthday) which she ordered medium rare and loved! This kid has a really mature palate! She even like her vegetable medley!

Although we were both really full (I ordered the salmon and she liked that too!) and asked for “to go boxes”, I told her since it was her birthday, we HAD to order dessert, even if we only took a bite of it. She ordered a Hot Fudge Sunday! It was bigger than her head! Well, almost.

l watched Samone pour the extra hot fudge over the ice cream, then I took three bites!

We spent the next two and half hours driving around the city looking at some of my favorite Christmas Light displays.

It was a great evening and we both had a great time!

Breakfast Taco

I made the breakfast Tostado recipe from the SkinnyTaste Cookbook, but I didn’t have any Tostado’s, so I used Corn Tortilla’s and baked them as directed, then I folded these up and ate them like a taco! The recipe calls for cumin and sea salt added to the Fat Free Refried beans, and I loved the way it all tasted with the scrambled egg whites. I altered the amount of my cheese and avocado so I could eat two of these for 10 PPV.

10 PPV

Tortilla with hummus and shredded carrots, Pear

These are 1 PointsPlus and really good!

I rolled this up and cut it into slices, just for fun I suppose. 🙂

Then I added a sliced Pear

I didn’t eat all of my Salmon or potatoes, but I did enjoy a few bites of the spinach dip and Samone’s Hot Fudge Sundae!

I’m excited to be picking up my niece at the airport this afternoon.

Tis’ the Season….

December 19, 2014

Hello Blog! I’ve missed you, but this girl has been super busy and unfortunately, you have suffered a bit of neglect.

I’ve been busy decorating, shopping, wrapping and going to parties, but I’ve also been relaxing, watching movies in the evenings with the hubb’s, reading my book in the afternoons, and just soaking up the Christmas Spirit.

Here is this past week in a somewhat short review.

Last Thursday was all about Christmas shopping and then, a total girly party. It was the neighborhood “Ladies Gift Exchange – Wear Your PJ’s” party and I had a blast!

I drank enough wine for two, I was super cozy at the party, and I came home with this awesome gift!

Friday, Mike and I had a last minute, super small get together where photo props and beer pong were the center of attention.

Even the dogs had fun!

Tucker loves his new glasses. Well, I love them on him anyway.

What’s a party without a photo booth? (okay…it’s a photo wall, and you need your own camera, but it served its purpose)

Saturday…..I had a date with Samone, my Little Sis!

We did a little shopping at my favorite Hardware Store….I know, right? But I always seem to find some of the best stocking stuffers here! I found the cutest little finger puppets for the grandkids stockings!!

What fun is Saturday Christmas shopping without a Starbucks stop??

We played around at my house with nail polish and more photo taking!

She might be just as goofy as me!!

Sunday I finished up my shopping and did lots of wrapping!

Santa stopped by and stuffed the stockings early too. He is gonna be really busy you guys, so I told him he could come by early.

I even put Jesus in the manger……is that wrong? (My dad built this when I was a kid. Isn’t it adorable?)

One night this week I made my first recipe out of my new Skinnytaste Cookbook!

I made the Broccoli Mac and Cheese and it was delicious! I only put half of the pasta in the dish that it called for, then added some cooked chicken. Mike said he could have eaten the entire casserole!! I think mine looks pretty close to the picture in the cookbook!

We ate that dinner on the couch while watching Miracle on 34th Street. The remake is already TWENTY years old! I’ve cried like a great big baby in every movie we’ve watched this week!

Miracle on 34th Street

The Holiday

Driving Miss Daisy

Scent of a Woman

I’m thinking Cary Grant tonight in An Affair to Remember, my all time favorite.

I’m saving Elf for when Tess comes for Christmas!

Here’s what she’s been up to with her roomies!! Cracks me up.

Yesterday, we had our first snow! It wasn’t much, but it was so peaceful. Feeling sappy I suppose.

It gave me a reason to get out my boots!

Last night we had Mikes work party, so I spent over an hour trying to curl my hair for about the third time since having it this length. I need more practice……..I look like I’m living in the 80’s. Clearly I do not know what I’m doing.

And then I added to my 80’s hair a big sweater of animal print!

Today I went to my WW meeting, then right to the grocery store to stock up some healthier choices than I have made this past week.

The next week will be full so I know that my blogging will be sporadic at best.

I’ve got a lot of thoughts in my head related to goals and my health in 2015. I’ve gone from drastically pondering that I just won’t drink any alcohol for the entire year, to pondering drinking only once a month, to then thinking twice a month, then thinking once every other month and back to thinking about just giving it up all together for a year. I know that my socializing greatly affects my weight, and really, it can’t be all that great for my overall health anyhow. I’m not really a “one glass of wine” kinda girl. I’m more of a one bottle girl, and that leads to bad food choices. If I’m doing all of this work for my health, I feel like the older I get, the more I need to be thinking about that.

Tess and I are doing the Color Run again this year in Dallas, and we have agreed that we will do more 5K’s together this year.

I track regularly, but I get in ruts where I miss days. I’m thinking of committing to tracking EVERY SINGLE DAY of 2015, no exceptions.

I have a lot of thoughts and plans for the year, I just need to finalize those in the next two weeks and put them in writing.

I walked 100 miles in August and it felt great to make a goal and reach it. I set the same goal for myself in November, and then didn’t make it. That feeling sucked.

I want to make goals that will be challenging for me, but also realistic, so I’ve got some thinking to do!

I hope you all are enjoying your December, however you have been spending it!

 Tis the season

I Love the Mobile Groomer!

December 11, 2014

Short and Sweet today.

I worked at the Food Truck yesterday and I love that job!

Afterwards, I came home to meet the mobile groomer at my house, whom I also love. Mishka has developed lots of anxiety in her old age, and never really liked car rides even when she was younger, so the whole idea of a mobile groomer, is awesome! (except the price)

I got even MORE Christmas shopping done after the dogs got pretty.

I haven’t made any time for exercise since my Hot Yoga class last Saturday!

I’m getting in LOTS of walking doing all of this holiday shopping! I wish I would have kept track of the miles I’ve walked. Kinda kidding, kinda not.

I will get in some exercise today, but I am in some sort of shopping crazy mood, I’m having fun doing it, and I’m on a mission to get it done so I’m not stressing about it all a few days before Christmas. Mike and I and the kids finalized our plans last night for Christmas Eve, and I’m feeling all sorts of organized and really looking forward to having a houseful.

Here are yesterday’s eats….

Make Today a Great Day!

December 10, 2014

It was a great day yesterday filled with Christmas Shopping and lunch with a friend, followed by more Christmas shopping on my own that lasted until 9:00 pm!

My girlfriend helped me pick out all sorts of great things! Thanks to technology and camera phones, I was able to text one of my daughters pictures of gifts I was pondering for her family, and get immediate feedback! My shopping yesterday was super successful!

I spend a crazy amount of time each year shopping for stocking stuffers. Since our children are grown, the main focus here on Christmas is the grandkids, except for Christmas Stockings!

I LOVE shopping for stocking stuffers for the whole family! One of my favorite parts of Christmas is sitting in our living room with the floor covered in wrapping paper from our unwrapped gifts, and watching our kids and our grandkids go through their stockings!

The family just keeps growing too!

I’ve been spending a little time “Pinning” outfits on Pinterest. I see outfits on there put together with things that I have in my closet that I would have never have thought to put together!  After looking at a few things that I had pinned, I remembered this silly furry lined jean jacket that I had in the back of the closet. I bought this thing 7 or 8 years ago in the juniors department at Walmart for under $10 on the clearance rack! There have been many times that I’ve cleaned out my closet that I think, I need to get rid of this hideous thing, then I don’t.

I wore it yesterday, combined with a flannel shirt that Tess brought home from college three or fours years ago, and I’m certain that it belonged to one of her college guy friends.

I loved the two together and people commented on the two of them ALL DAY LONG! Cracked me up!!!

Okay, that’s all the fun for yesterday. I’m ready for another great day today!

Grilled Cheese and Apple Sandwich

5 Weight Watcher PointsPlus

2 Slices of Trader Joe’s Sprouted 7 Grain Bread

2 Slices of 2% Sharp Cheddar Cheese

Apple Slices

1 T. Light Spread

Slice an apple into really thin slices. You only need a few slices, so crunch on the rest while you make your sandwich, save them for later, or dip them in nut butter for dessert!

It’s a grilled cheese sandwich, you know what to do!

Top it off with the remaining slice of cheese to hold the apple slices in there and the second slice of bread.

l love the crunch and the sweetness of this sandwich!

I also love that it is only 5 Weight Watcher PointsPlus!
