Books On Tape? Anyone?

I like to switch things up once in a while, so yesterday I picked a WW meeting to go to that I’ve never been to, then found a park to walk in that I’ve never walked in, and I finished listening to my book on tape, which I’ve never done before.

The WW meeting was great and I love the Leader, Liz. The park had more moms and kids under the age of 5 than anything I’ve ever seen. I like the way that my book ended.

Have you ever listened to a book on tape? I’m not sure how I feel about it. This particular book is a memoir and was narrated by the the author.

The voice that she spoke with through the entire book was very monotone. The memoir is about her upbringing as a child in a polygamist family and her story was very sad.  I found it hard to listen to at times. I’m aware that the voice matched the tone of the story, but I think I would have preferred to read this story and conjure up my own idea of her expressions and her voice throughout the story.

I’ll listen to another book on tape and see what I think. Maybe listening to a memoir for my first book on tape wasn’t such a great idea?

StepBet

Yesterday was the first day of the StepBet, and this is actually just a warm up week and doesn’t count in the “bet”, but I’m treating it as though it does.

The app sets your goal for you based on your past activity and your daily step goal that you have set for yourself. (I’m pretty sure this is how it works.)

The StepBet is 4 Active Days (9,727 steps for me), 2 Stretch Days (12,027 steps for me) and 1 rest day.

Yesterday was a success and I plan to complete all six weeks successfully!

  1. Thank you so much! I remember now someone saying in book club something about getting them from the library and had forgotten all about it! I guess I felt like I was cheating if I wasn’t reading. lol It seems though that now when I do try to read, I get so sleepy.

Now I’ll have to check out audio books.

    Thanks again Sue

  2. I check out audio books from my library and listen while in the car. I also listen to audio books on my phone when walking. There are apps that work with your library. you check them out for free for 21 days then they disappear from your phone. Overdrive is one but your local library could tell you more.

  3. I’ll give it a try. My daughter is always suggesting that I try podcast and I’ve never listened to any before.

Thank you for these recommendations Karen!

  4. i did notice that I did that a little bit too! I was walking at the park and watching the kids, then all of a sudden, I was like, Wait…what did she just say? Rewind. lol

I do like to visit different meetings. No two meetings are the same, that is for certain!

  5. I’ve tried books on tape but I find that I tune them out but I do love reading books. I have a couple on my Kindle but I haven’t read them yet.
A couple of years ago I spent a summer visiting other WW meetings but also going to my regular meeting—-I did enjoy doing this.

  6. I enjoy books on tape. I listened to them when doing the 4.5 hr college drop-off and pick-up; also now that he’s relocated, I listed to them when doing the Boston-Philly trek. If you haven’t already, you might give listen to “The Moth” and/or “This American Life”, podcasts that are spoken word stories IThe Moth’s are spoken by the person that experienced the story) and don’t last anywhere near as long as a book, probably average 30-60 minutes. I particularly like “The Moth”. They can be heard on “I Heart Radio” which is a free download and podcasts are free. I listen to these when walking (the track in circles) as the lengths are great for a good walk.
