I Graduated from the Oncologist

I had an appointment with my oncologist yesterday afternoon. She said that since I’ve stopped taking the Tamoxifen, there is really no longer a reason to see me. It was recommended that I take it for five years, and after four years, I’m done with it. She wanted to make certain that I understood the risk of stopping a year early, and the benefits of taking it for another year. I feel comfortable stopping it a year early and I’m ready to move forward.

I’ve had many conversations with other breast cancer survivors around Tamoxifen and alternative estrogen blockers. While this drug is recommend for breast cancer patients with estrogen receptor breast cancer, (the cancer cells feed off of estrogen) some can take it with mild side effects, and others not so much. My body feels like I’ve aged 50 years. While developing osteoarthritis the last few years, my oncologist, hand surgeon and rheumatologist all tell me that Tamoxifen can exacerbate the osteoarthritis.

We talked about all of the health benefits of having a trainer and getting regular exercise, eating right, cutting way back on the alcohol and the importance of sleep. I feel good about the changes that I’ve made and I’m comfortable with my decision to stop taking the Tamoxifen a year early.

Now that I’ve graduated from the oncologist, they will put me in their Cancer Survivorship program. I’ll have an appointment every six months. I’m not completely sure what these appointments will look like, I just like that I now have full closer with the breast surgeon and the oncologist, and thats great news!

Activity – I got in a beautiful 3 mile walk and an ab workout.

After a trip to Costco, I pulled one of these granola bars out of the box I’d just bought for a quick bite.
